Finally, the time had come: I visited the mighty Swiss band Gotthard.
Read all about it and why it was such a special experience.
"Nuremberg, ihr singt so schön!"
Who the hell is this band he's talking about, you might ask.
Gotthard was formed in 1992 in Lugano, Switzerland. The band is named after the Gotthard Pass, a famous mountain in the Swiss Alps. They're known for blending melodic rock with a heavier sound and have been quite influential in the European rock scene since their formation in the early 1990s: they have achieved significant commercial success, particularly in Switzerland and Germany. With more than two million records sold worldwide, every album after the debut record reached number one on the Swiss charts, which makes them the most successful band in Switzerland of all times. While hugely popular in their home country, Gotthard has also gained an international following. They have toured extensively across Europe and have shared stages with legendary bands like Deep Purple, Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams and AC/DC. Lastly, they contributed the anthem for the European Football Championship in 2008, which was held in Switzerland/Austria.
So far, so good. Why are they so important to me?
Gotthard's second record, "Dial Hard" which was released in 1994, was one of the first albums I ever listened to. You HAVE TO listen to the opening track "Higher": original frontman Steve Lee blasts out a vocal intro that will blow your socks off. Hard-Rock the way it's supposed to be! (learn more about my musical influences).
Over the years, they released many great records, with massive stadium-like choruses and melodies. Steve Lee's vocal performance was the heart of the band - I'd even go so far as to say that Steve Lee is one of the best five vocalists and performer to ever exist in rock 'n roll history! I can only tell from video recordings but his stage presence seems second to none.
Watch and listen to him - you'll get it. (read more about my ratings).
Their catalogue climaxed with the 2009 release "Need To Believe" - without a doubt, their best record to date. Unfortunately, very sad news followed along: in the fall of 2010, frontman Steve Lee died in a tragic accident during a motor cycle trip through Nevada, USA. What a loss.
Two years later they introduced new frontman Nic Maeder and celebrated their comeback with the hit single "Remember It's Me". The first seconds you hit the play button you'll be like "damn, is it Steve himself?"
